What To Do When There Is No Governance: SC Slams Modi Govt

Justice Lokur made the observation while hearing a PIL filed in relation to the National Urban Livelihoods Mission

The Supreme Court on Thursday slammed the Modi government by asking what the court should do when there is “no governance” in the country and citizens’ rights are being violated due to government’s inaction.

The apex court’s statement came a day after Union law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, while addressing a gathering of SC judges, had said “judiciary should maintain restraint in interfering in issues of policy and governance.”

According to The Times of India report, Justice Madan Lokur was also present in the gathering.

Later, while hearing the PIL filed in relation to the Centre’s ambitious National Urban Livelihoods Mission launched in 2013 with the objective of providing shelter to homeless people, Justice Lokur made the said remark.

Even though the Narendra Modi government has spent more than Rs. 2000 crore on the project, the court observed no improvement in the situation of the homeless.

“We have been told that governance is for the government and we cannot do anything. But there is no governance. What to do then,” quipped Justice Lokur.
